Goodlives, is our community-based project located at the West Lakes Science Park. It is dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey to employment by providing a nurturing environment where they can engage in outdoor activities and learn valuable skills. Goodlives focuses on sustainability through the growth and sale of fresh produce, which not only aids in the well-being of our Learners but also contributes to the broader community. Recently, a generous donation from Snowball has enabled us to expand our growing capacity.
Snowball’s very kind donation provided these resources which were badly needed to enhance Goodlives’ horticultural infrastructure. The funds were used to purchase high-quality soil for growing and wood for the construction of raised beds. These raised beds allow for the cultivation of a wider variety of crops and improve growing conditions for existing produce. Raised beds offer several advantages in gardening, including better soil drainage, improved soil quality, and easier access for planting and harvesting. For Goodlives, these benefits translate into a more productive and efficient use of the available land, enabling the project to grow more produce and further its mission of a more sustainable future.
The project will not only provide fresh, locally grown food but also create opportunities to have products such as vegetable boxes, jams, and chutneys. These products can be sold to local businesses within the community, generating income that can be reinvested into the project.
The learners at Goodlives, many of whom are working to improve their mental health and employability prospects, have experienced many benefits from the addition of the raised beds. Learners have been involved in every stage of the process, from working with volunteers to construct the beds to planting and maintaining the crops. This involvement fosters a sense of ownership and pride in their work. It has also allowed learners to engage in new gardening techniques and to grow a more diverse range of crops. This hands-on experience is invaluable for building confidence and competence in practical skills that are transferable to employment settings.
The act of gardening and working with nature has well-documented benefits for mental health. The raised beds have given a structured and rewarding task for our learners, helping to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. Seeing the tangible results of their efforts in the form of healthy, thriving plants has boosted our learners’ self-esteem and reinforced the value of their contribution to the project.
We really appreciate Snowball’s generosity, which has not only advanced the practical aspects of the project but also enriched the lives of those who participate in it. Thankyou!!
